Johnson-Su Compost is a rich, fungally dominant compost made from organic matter such as leaves, woodchips, grass, or straw. The compost is created in a “bioreactor” that mimics the conditions of a forest floor. It is processed over the course of at least a year by maintaining high moisture levels and allowing red wiggler worms to work through the material. This method allows beneficial fungi and other microbes to thrive. Because it is so concentrated in natural biology and chemistry found all around us, only two to three pounds of Johnson-Su Compost is needed per acre when applied as a liquid extract.
In this video, we unpack the "why" and "how" behind Johnson-Su and the BEAM method (Biologically Enhanced Agricultural Management), developed by Dr. David Johnson and his wife Hui-Chun Su.
Soil is an incredibly complex, balanced, and connected system of organisms working together symbiotically. Johnson-Su Compost is alive with these organisms—including fungi, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, and worms. It has been shown to provide tremendous improvements in both plant and soil health. These benefits include faster seed germination, stronger root systems, healthier and faster-growing plants, and more resilient crops.

When Johnson-Su Compost is made into a liquid extract, it becomes a powerful biological inoculant and bio-stimulant. Just 2 pounds per acre of Johnson-Su Compost applied as an extract introduces an estimated 96 million bacteria and 4–5 billion fungal spores per square foot of soil. This isn't a theoretical idea—this is measured microbial restoration backed by research from Dr. David Johnson and his wife Hui-Chin Su-Johnson, the inventors of this composting method.
This kind of intentional inoculation is not new to us as humans. Winemakers don’t leave fermentation to chance—they inoculate their wine with select strains of beneficial bacteria. Bakers add yeast to dough, even though wild yeast exists in the air, because intentionality produces consistent, healthy results.
In medicine, one of the most effective interventions for restoring gut health in patients with severe microbiome imbalances is a fecal microbiota transplant (FMT). By reintroducing beneficial microbes from a healthy donor, the entire gut ecosystem can recover and begin functioning properly again. Johnson-Su Compost works the same way for degraded soil—restoring balance, resilience, and health by adding back the biology it was missing.
In simplified terms, bacteria and fungi break down organic matter and soil particles (sand, silt, and clay), unlocking nutrients that are otherwise inaccessible. These nutrients must be converted into plant-available forms by microbes. Plants then absorb these nutrients, and humans and animals eat the plants. Microorganisms in our digestive systems complete the cycle, helping us absorb those nutrients, with the byproducts returning to the soil. Without a thriving soil food web to drive this cycle, every part of the food chain becomes vulnerable to nutrient deficiencies.
Nutrient deficiencies are the root cause of most pest and disease issues—not just in plants, but in animals and people as well.
Johnson-Su Compost gives the soil a significant boost of this diverse microbiology, powering the soil food web and re-establishing balance. It also increases soil organic matter and carbon content, improving water movement and retention. These traits make it an effective tool for inoculating soil, improving compost piles, and boosting seed germination when used as a coating.

Improving soil health isn’t just about growing better crops—it’s about healing the entire food chain. As humans, we sit at the top of this chain, but our health is rooted in the invisible life beneath our feet. If the soil isn’t healthy, nothing above it will be healthy either. Caring for the soil is caring for our own health.
This is why Johnson-Su Compost is such a powerful tool—not just for agriculture, but for human and planetary well-being.
